Vegetable oil produced, consumed, and marketed in Indonesia is mainly from coconut and oil palm. The coconut area is about 3.3 Mha of which 3.2 Mha (97.12%) are smallholders. The production increased, on average, by 4.7% during the period 1985-89. The high growth rate of production from government estates is mainly due to area expansion and high productivity. The demand for coconut oil and fat for domestic use tends to increase over time. The growth rate of consumption was 4.2% for the period 1980-90. Based on Susenas (National Survey) 1987, it was revealed that the higher the income of farmers the higher the consumption of vegetable oil. In response to an increase in demand for coconut oil as a result of population and economic growth, the Indonesian government has implemented several programmes of industrial crop development, with regard to improvement of cultural management, postharvest technique, marketing, and farm management. The target for coconut development at the end of the fifth Five Year Development Plan (REPELITA V) 1993 is to increase exports of coconut products. Oil palm development programmes during REPELITA V have created the employment for 556 549 workers, with export volumes of 2 755 000 tons for palm oil and 575 000 tons for palm kernel oil: plantation area has increased by 4.6%. Other sources of vegetable oils, such as castor, sesame, cotton, kepok and sunflower are being developed.
