Change of infection rate by post-harvest treatments on scab infected barley grains.

Warm and humid conditions with heavy rainfall at post-heading promoted scab (Fusarium spp.) in barley spikes. More than 90% of barley spikes and c. 25% of grains (hulled barley 25.9%, hulless barley 24.6%) were identified as scab-infected at 30 days after heading in experimental fields near Suwon, Korea Republic. An infection rate of 36.9% was observed at harvest but the rate increased to 62.0% of grains in sealed bags at 3 days after harvest. Immediate drying of harvested grains was suggested for postharvest treatment to prevent further infection by scab. A reduction in infected grains was positively correlated with thresher wind speed. Germination rate after threshing and screening was 90.8% in healthy grains, compared with 85.2% in moderately infected grains. Healthy and moderately infected grains were considered usable as seeds for the next crop.
