Onions are traditionally imported into the USA from Mexico during the winter until the new Texas and California crops begin in April. A pilot project to improve onion yield and quality in Central America, particularly in upland valley areas, for export to the USA is described. The project addresses marketing strategies (the best market opportunities exist for "jumbo" onions ie. >3 inches in diameter), management practices (including planting date and density and irrigation and fertilization regimes), suitable cultivars, and postharvest handling.
