The light saturation point and photosynthetic rate was measured at 5 growth stages: (1) leaf opening; (2) flowering; (3) fruit development; (4) postharvest; and (5) runner growth. Light saturation point ranged from 700 to 800 micro E m-2 s-1 and photosynthetic rate varied between 23.5 mg dm-2 h-1 (stage 1) and 12.2 mg dm-2 h-1 (stage 4). Maximum photosynthetic rate occurred at 20 deg C for stages 1 and 3, and 15 deg for stages 2, 4 and 5. Leaf chlorophyll content was highest at stage 1 (1.66 micro g/g FW) and declined gradually to stage 5 (0.7 micro g/g FW). Specific leaf weight was lowest at stage 1 and increased gradually during plant growth.
