Mycotoxins: molecular strategies for control.

Molecular strategies to control problems associated with mycotoxins are reviewed, covering postharvest control which requires detection of mycotoxins in contaminated food or feed and their elimination by physical, chemical or biological means, and preharvest control of mycotoxin contamination based on development of an understanding of the molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of mycotoxin biosynthesis in fungi. Current research on the molecular biology of aflatoxin biosynthesis in Aspergillus is detailed. The potential future applications of the techniques of molecular biology in developing an understanding of the biology and evolution of the aflatoxin biosynthesis pathway and in developing strategies for preharvest control of aflatoxin contamination are discussed.
