When cut rose cv. Sonia flowers were held in water after dry treatment (20 deg C, 60% RH and a 12 h photoperiod for 24, 36 or 48 h) the transpiration rate increased during the first 3 days and then declined. Transpiration and water uptake decreased with increasing length of the drying period. Water balance was positive until day 3-4 in stems which had had all leaves removed, but this period was shorter in stems retaining 50 or 100% of their leaves. The number of stems with bent necks was correlated with water loss and with the water potential of the flower.
