The disinfestation efficacy of a 1-min dip in fenthion or dimethoate (400 mg/litre water) was tested against eggs and larvae of the tephritid Bactrocera cucumis on harvested zucchinis [marrows] and rock melons. Fenthion gave 100% mortality of eggs and 3rd-instar larvae on rock melons, 100% mortality of eggs on zucchini and >99.99% mortality of 3rd-instar larvae on zucchini. Similar results were obtained with dimethoate. Residues were below the Australian maximum limits of 2 mg/kg, and there were no adverse effects on taste.
