Evaluation of Silwet L-77 for postharvest disinfestation of thrip in asparagus.

Silwet L-77, an organosilicone surfactant, at 100-1500 p.p.m. and 40% ethanol were tested for disinfestation of asparagus of thrips in New Zealand. Significant thrips control was achieved with Silwet L-77 at 250 p.p.m. with dipping times of 15 min. Lower concn of Silwet L-77 and longer dipping times were less toxic to asparagus spears than high concn used with short dipping times. None of the Silwet-77 treatments significantly affected asparagus spear quality, while 40% ethanol treatment was unsuitable.
