Results from experiments with Ralls and Starking apples at 2 sites during 1986-88 showed that a preharvest foliar application of 500 p.p.m. Polaris [glyphosine] delayed apple senescence, reduced ethylene evolution and the rate of respiration, and controlled ethylene-forming enzyme activity and the conversion of ACC to ethylene. The firmness of apples treated with 500 p.p.m. and 1000 p.p.m. Polaris was greater than that of controls. Treated apples had higher sugar and soluble solids contents. Dipping fruits in Polaris solution decreased the alpha -farnesene and conjugated trienes in apples, thus reducing the scald incidence.
