Coconut makes a significant contribution to India's national economy. The crop enjoys a prominent position among other plantation crops and its industries provide income and employment to a sizeable section of the rural population in the major coconut growing states of India. However, the post harvest processing sector is still in its infancy. This paper outlines a study which aimed to assess the performance of desiccated coconut units in Kozhikode and Kannur Districts of Kerala. The study is based on primary data collected from all the desiccated coconut units in the two districts in 1990/91. Analysis of capital investment and costs and returns was done by the tabular method and percentage analysis. The profitability rate as well as the problems incurred are discussed. Despite the profitability of this industry, capitalization was found to be low, suggesting the need for policies to ensure the survival of the industry.
