Piles of sugarbeet roots stored outdoors under plastic sheets in Japan are rotted by Botrytis cinerea and/or Penicillium expansum, which become a problem if the temp. rises above 4-6 deg C and storage is prolonged. Details are given of screening procedures by which an isolate of Pseudomonas cepacia with activity against these fungi on inoculated pieces of sugarbeet root and on whole roots in plastic bags was selected from numerous isolates collected from field soils. The selected str., designated D-2-2, was deposited in the Fermentation Research Institute under the number FERMP-11559, and will be tested further.
