Harvesting, drying and storage of grain sorghum in Australia.

A substantial portion of the sorghum crop may be harvested at >13.5% moisture content, the normal limit for safe storage without drying. Simulation of optimum harvesting strategies indicated that harvesting the mature crop at about 18% moisture content and then drying is likely to be more profitable than waiting for the moisture content to fall below 13.5%. In any case, harvesting at <13.5% moisture content may not be possible due to climatic influences for crops maturing late in the season. Current methods of controlling postharvest diseases and pests are reviewed. The main areas of potential improvement are in the timing of harvest and in techniques of drying. On-floor drying and fluid bed systems both are useful alternatives to current drying methods.
