The factors influencing apple susceptibility to the storage disorder scald are summarized. Advice is given on control methods (ventilation and charcoal air filters, use of oiled wraps, CA storage and postharvest treatment with antioxidants such as diphenylamine and ethoxyquin) and the prediction of scald potential. Tables present data, accumulated over 6 years, on the relationship of preharvest hours below 50 deg F and the occurrence of scald after 20 weeks of storage in air at 32 deg for the cultivars Cortland and Delicious. The trees were of different ages, on different rootstocks and, in some cases, of different cultivar strains. The fruits were dipped or not in diphenylamine at various concentrations.
