Production of chamomile, Chamomilla recutita (L.) Rauschert, in Slovakia.

Studies were conducted to investigate (i) the cultivation of new cultivars, with the aim of improving essential oil content and composition, and (ii) methods of mechanizing harvesting and postharvest processing for large-scale cultivation. Four cultivars were grown, 3 of which have been developed since 1972, namely Bona, Kosice-1 and Kosice-2 (now accepted as Goral), and Bohemia, which has been recognized since 1952 (before which time wild plants were used). The recently-developed cultivars had essential oil compositions differing from that of Bohemia, having higher levels of alpha -bisabolol and chamazulene, and higher total oil content of flowers. A large-scale mechanical harvester, the VZR-4, was used successfully. Flower heads were collected using a comb roller, and a vacuum system moved them into collecting trimmers without damaging them. Technical data for 4 harvesters are given. A sorting machine was developed with a processing output of 1200 kg FW/h. The expense of artificial drying made it disadvantageous compared with sun-drying. It is concluded that selected cultivars can be successfully cultivated and harvested on a large scale in Slovakia.
