A mechanical system was developed and tested for detaching cured leaves from burley tobacco plants and sorting leaves by stalk position for marketing. Preliminary testing indicated a potential reduction of 50% of currently required manual labour for this process. This would amount to a 20% reduction in the total manual labour currently required to produce and market the crop. Tests indicated that between 2 and 6% of marketable leaf material is left attached to plant stalks, depending on the level of leaf m.c. during operation. Sorting of leaves by physical characteristics, i.e., colour, length, thickness, etc., can be continuously adjusted during operation. Leaves are presented to an operator for placement into a compressed rectangular bale for marketing.
