Results of studies monitoring aflatoxin contamination of food commodities in Nepal are summarized. A total of 850 food samples, mainly cereals, pulses, oilseeds and spices and approx. 150 samples of feed and feed ingredients were monitored for aflatoxin content during 1980-1987. Maize and groundnut were the 2 commodities most prone to aflatoxin contamination. Ecologically, Terai Southern Plain area was more susceptible to aflatoxin compared with hills and mountainous areas. Coincidentally, toxigenic fungi (Aspergillus flavus) predominated in Terai. A. flavus isolates from Terai area produced higher amounts of aflatoxin B1 (6334 p.p.b.) than isolates from the hills and mountains. Max. level of aflatoxin B1 was found in maize (321 p.p.b.) and groundnut (634 p.p.b.). Max. levels of aflatoxin B1 in poultry feed was 1100 p.p.b.
