Results of mycological assessments of Thai maize are summarized. Aspergillus flavus was detected on and around stored maize, in fields near piles of ears, but not in harvested fields. A. flavus contamination was higher in maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) infested maize kernels than in non-infested kernels. Weevils carried a significant body burden of A. flavus and Fusarium moniliforme [Gibberella fujikuroi] spores. Diplodia zeae [Stenocarpella maydis] was the major pathogen attacking Thai maize. G. fujikuroi, F. semitectum [F. pallidoroseum] and Penicillium citrinum were found in all maize samples. Recommendations are made for further research on the control of aflatoxins in Thai maize and guidelines for prevention and control are given.
