Starking Delicious apple trees were sprayed with daminozide (1000 mg/litre) in midsummer in 1987 and 1988. Controls were left unsprayed. Fruits were harvested on 12 and 24 Sep. 1987, and 7 and 17 Sep. 1988, and stored in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage (3% O2 and 4% CO2 at 0-1 deg C). Two CA rooms were used: a low ethylene-controlled atmosphere (LE-CA) room, fitted with a continuous ethylene removal system, with a store ethylene concentration ranging from 4 to 15 micro l/litre; and a high ethylene-controlled atmosphere (HE-CA) room, where ethylene was not scrubbed and store ethylene concentration was >100 micro l/litre. In both seasons, after 8 months of storage in HE-CA, fruits harvested earlier were less ripe and had developed more scald than fruits harvested later. Daminozide-sprayed and earlier-harvested fruits which had been stored in LE-CA were firmer and more acid after storage than unsprayed, later-harvested fruits stored in HE-CA. Generally, after a 7-day, post-storage holding period at 20 deg , the differences between treatments were maintained. The soluble solids content of fruit samples was similar for all treatments. LE-CA stored fruits developed less scald than HE-CA stored fruits in the 1987/88 season; however, scald development was similar in LE-CA and HE-CA stored fruits in the 1988/89 season.
