A collection was made of >700 isolates of microorganisms occurring naturally on apple trees and fruits during the growing season and on stored fruits. These isolates were screened in vitro and in vivo for antagonistic activity towards P. malicorticis and N. galligena. In agar cultures, 50 isolates were found to be antagonistic towards one or both pathogens. On apple fruits inoculated with the pathogens, 4 bacterial and 3 fungal isolates were able to reduce lesion development at 20 deg C. At 4 deg , however, these isolates had little effect on lesion development. Only culture filtrates from one unidentified fungal isolate reduced lesion growth of both pathogens at 20 deg and of P. malicorticis at 4 deg .
