Acetone extracts of the fruits of peppers (Capsicum frutescens) and chillies (C. annuum) were assayed in the laboratory against the stored products pest Callosobruchus maculatus. Extracts of peppers significantly reduced the fecundity of female bruchids and the number of adults that emerged from treated cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) seeds compared to an untreated control, but extracts from chillies had no such significant effects. Powders prepared from ground peppers and chillies evoked different degrees of repellency on adults of C. maculatus. Powdered peppers could be effective protectants against the bruchid in stored cowpeas.
