The scientific and technical advances that have occurred in the approach to pest management in the past few decades, and their advantages and drawbacks, are discussed. The successes have included improved physical containment (especially important for the postharvest storage of grain and other dry food commodities), the use of molecular biological techniques for the production of genetically engineered crops and improved natural enemies, and the use of parasitic nematodes and pheromones for the control of insects. It is concluded that the use of these technologies, the integration of cultural, chemical, biological and physical approaches to pest management, and better modelling, expert and forecasting systems will improve pest control in the next century, provided that they are developed and implemented in a sound socio-economic, political and environmental context with the aid of scientists and research institutions.
