Retention of adults of Oryzaephilus surinamensis in a food mixture (cracked corn [maize], cracked wheat, rolled oats and kibbled carobs at 1:1:1:0.2 by weight) that is used for detecting stored products insect pests in Kansas, USA, was compared with retention in each of cracked maize, cracked wheat, cracked sorghum, kibbled carobs and rolled oats. Choice tests were performed using 80 unsexed adults in 41.5 cm diameter wooden arenas with 5 g samples of 1 or more food materials in total darkness at 27 deg C and 45% RH. Retention was greater in cracked maize or rolled oats than in cracked wheat, cracked sorghum or kibbled carobs. There were no significant differences between cracked maize and rolled oats in most tests. Adult retention was similar in the food mixture and in cracked maize. The inclusion of carobs into the food mixture made no difference to retention of insects. It is concluded that cracked maize or rolled oats have potential as baits to detect residual populations of O. surinamensis in empty grain stores, warehouses or outdoors.
