An oil-acetone extract and a powdered preparation from the fruit of Piper guineense and seeds of Dennettia tripetala and Aframomum melegueta were assessed under laboratory conditions for their relative toxicities to Sitophilus zeamais. Experiments consisted of exposing 32-day-old adults of S. zeamais to maize grains coated or admixed with the oil or powder, resp. The oils were toxic in the order P. guineense > D. tripetala > A. melegueta, whilst the powders were toxic in the order D. tripetala > A. melegueta > P. guineense. It is suggested that the efficacy of the oils depended on the solubility of the constituent active ingredients.
