A total of 110 strains of Alternaria (81.9% belonging to A. alternata) was isolated from 157 decayed apples. Of these, 47% produced alternariol (AOH), 41% produced alternariol monomethyl ether (AME) and 38.2% produced both of these toxins, when inoculated into apples, which were then incubated at 25 deg C. Only 1 strain, CMTA 65, produced tenuazonic acid (TA). When the strains were grown on yeast extract sucrose medium, 97% produced TA, 82.3% produced altertoxin-1, 14.7% AOH and 22.6% AME.
