California nectarines which had not been treated with postharvest fungicides were commercially fumigated with methyl bromide (48 g/m3 at more than or equal to 21 deg C for 2 h, for Cydia pomonella control) and shipped by van container to Japan. The shipments took from 15 to 18 days from the time they left the packing house until they cleared plant quarantine and customs in Japan. Fruit temperatures remained below 3 deg during transportation, but the fruits were exposed to higher temperatures at both the US and Japanese ports. More fruits of the cv. Summer Grand were affected with methyl bromide injury than fruits of the cv. Red Diamond, but the severity of injury on affected fruits was greater for the latter cultivar. In a separate trial, commercially fumigated fruits were held in the laboratory under conditions simulating commercial surface shipment conditions. The fruits were held for 2 weeks at 1 deg . After one additional week at either 10 or 20 deg , the fruits retained an average of 44% and 11% of their 2-weak storage firmness, respectively. Fruits held for 3 weeks at 1 deg and one additional week at 10 or 20 deg retained 48% and 12% of their 3-week storage firmness, respectively.
