Germination, fruit development, yield and postharvest characteristics of Cucumis metuliferus.

C. metuliferus (common names, African horned cucumber, kiwano or melano) is endemic to the semi-arid regions of southern and central Africa, where is it eaten as a supplement by the local population. A field trial was conducted in northern Negev, Israel, in 1988, to study the effects of sowing date on crop development. Fruit ripening (in the field and during storage), and the effect of a postharvest ethylene treatment were also studied (data presented). The best time for sowing was between mid Mar. and early Apr. Fruits required about 35 days to reach the mature-green stage and another 2 weeks to reach full maturity. Ethylene treatment was beneficial and may enable growers to harvest the crop at the breaker stage and to store fruits for a longer period. The shelf-life at 20-24 C deg was remarkably long (at least 3 months). Seed germination studies indicated that the optimum temperatures for germination were 20-35 deg C and that germination was unaffected by salinity up to 50 mM NaCl.
