Effects of borax and guazatine on the ripening and postharvest diseases of tomato (cv. Flora-Dade).

Flora-Dade tomatoes at the mature-green stage were dipped for 1 minute in either borax at 1000 ppm, guazatine at 400 ppm or a mixture of borax at 500 ppm plus guazatine at 200 ppm before being air-dried, packed in polyethylene bags and stored for 40 days at 13 deg C. Guazatine and borax alone significantly reduced the production of ethylene measured at 9,10 and 11 days after treatment, but the mixture had no significant effect. The mixture reduced fungal infections to 6.7% after 40 days, compared with 63% in the controls. High ethylene production and the presence of disease caused high carbon dioxide concentrations, which inhibited ripening.
