Control of post-harvest decay and browning of litchi fruit by sodium metabisulphite and low pH dips.

Litchi chinensis cvs Mauritius and Madras were treated with a sodium metabisulfite dip alone, as well as in combination with hydrochloric acid dips, vitafilm, Semperfresh G [a fatty acid-sucrose ester mixture] and modified atmosphere packaging. The effect of the treatments on postharvest disease, browning, colour and taste was evaluated. Sodium metabisulfite dip followed by hydrochloric acid dips or Vitafilm gave the best results with respect to all 4 criteria.
