The regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) technique was simulated using daily climatic data covering a period of 30 years for the subhumid Emilia-Romagna region. Daily water balance was calculated for 3 peach growing areas and 3 peach cultivars maturing at different periods and grown in different soil types. Findings show that, in early season cultivars, limiting water availability affected plant growth only during the postharvest phase, while in late-season cultivars it did so more during the rapid growth stage than during the postharvest phase. Medium-season peach cultivars were affected by RDI during both pre- and postharvest phases. However, this occurred only in a limited number of years and especially on coarse and grass-mulched soils.
