The mid-project results of a series of field trials aimed at developing an outdoor system of grain storage using plastic film are presented. Three prototype designs were field tested with maize and rice. Assessment was based on grain quality after 3 months of storage. Parameters used in evaluating success of the enclosures included moisture migration, milling recovery, yellowing, m.c. and insect infestation. Rice quality in fully insulated (5-sided) storage plastic enclosures was consistently better than those stored in 1-sided (top) insulated enclosures. Excessive quality losses were obtained in enclosures without any insulation. Further field trials on the improved enclosure designs are still being conducted.
