Investigations into the postharvest handling of daikon (Raphanus sativus L.).

Daikon roots could be exported from Australia to Asian markets but, as a low value crop, export to these markets via sea freight is the only viable option. Preliminary studies have shown that the major limiting factor during storage for 4 weeks is the development of a physiological disorder "pithiness" which develops when air spaces form in the root rendering it unmarketable. In this study, growth characteristics of 4 daikon cultivars (Fukumi, Tomas, Oshin and Long White) were investigated. Roots were harvested at several stages of development and stored for 25 days at 1 deg C and 90-95% RH. Root quality was assessed 3 days after transfer to 20 deg and pithiness was rated on a severity scale. The results show that at commercial harvest the roots were still growing rapidly. Pithiness did not develop significantly during storage of Fukumi, Tomas or Oshin roots, but did develop both pre- and postharvest in Long White roots indicating that occurrence of pithiness is not a function of senescence but is highly correlated with genotype.
