Open sun drying is the traditional method of drying crops in most third world countries. Improving the drying technique through a better understanding of the effects of different parameters should assist in minimizing crop losses and drying time. A study was designed to develop a simple computer model of a crop bed spread on a pavement receiving energy from the sun, this energy in turn being dissipated through evaporation of the moisture, convective heat transfer to the air, conduction to the ground and considerable energy increase in the crop. Governing equations for heat and mass transfer were solved numerically. The effects of the variation of incident solar radiation, ambient RH, ambient temp., depth of crop bed, initial m.c. and wind speed over the crop on the drying rate and crop temp. were studied.
