A study was conducted to determine the appropriate rotary drier operating conditions for maize and to develop a mathematical model for rotary maize drying. Results showed that if feed rate, rotating speed, tilt angle or air velocity increased, residence time of maize in the drier decreased. The model was developed using the principle of thin layer drying and the mass and energy balance equations. The model can predict the drying rate relatively well and experimental values were in agreement with the predicted residence time for rotary maize drying. Rotary drying of maize should only be used as a first stage of drying, to a final m.c. >19% w.b. since its energy consumption is comparable with other high temp. drying methods. To achieve efficient energy use, the drier should be operated at the highest temp. and air flow possible without adversely affecting maize quality.
