This review deals with the origin of common buckwheat, the history of its production and distribution, and its biology and morphology. Cultural and climatic requirements are discussed along with pest, disease and weed problems. The role of honey bees in the pollination of the crop is described and the characteristics of buckwheat honey are given. Postharvest requirements of the crop and food processing techniques are described. The differences between common buckwheat and tartary buckwheat [Fagopyrum tataricum] are mentioned.
