Zingiber officinale rhizomes, washed after harvest and cured for a week under shade, were graded into 200-300 and 300-400 g lots and stored at room temperature (17-25 deg C) with 40-80% RH or at 13 plus or minus 1 deg and 80% RH. Different types of packing and waxing of cut surfaces were also tested. Cool conditions prolonged storability by reducing weight loss and sprouting but resulted in a higher pathogen incidence than at room temperature. No beneficial effect of waxing was observed, and packing in PVC film reduced weight loss but increased incidence of fungal infection.
