ABA involvement in low temperature sweetening of potatoes.

Potato cv. Norchip (sweetens at low temperatures) and ND860-2 (tolerant of low temperatures) tubers were stored at 4 or 10 deg C. Immediately after harvest there was an increase in sugar content at the same time as there was an increase in ABA content, particularly in the medullary tissue; changes in ABA in the lateral and apical bud areas were less dramatic. ABA content was higher in Norchip at 4 deg than in ND860-2. Addition of 10 mM ABA to potato callus at 3 deg resulted in higher fructose and glucose contents particularly in ND860-2. Respiration rates were similar for both potato cultivars.
