Several studies were undertaken to improve understanding of the rice sundrying process. Optimum thickness of the rice layer and mixing intervals during sundrying were investigated, along with solar energy requirements and effects of varietal differences and initial moisture content. The possibility of mechanizing the sundrying operation to improve labour productivity and the efficiency of the method was also explored with the development of a tractor-mounted implement for spreading, turning and mixing rice on concrete sundrying pavements. The implement will also collect sundried rice into piles to facilitate bagging operations. Performance tests showed that the implement can spread the rice 3 times faster than the manual method, turn it at twice the manual rate, mix it at 1.25 times the manual rate and pile it up 3 times faster than manually. Costs were compared for the traditional and mechanized methods and it was found that mechanization could reduce costs by as much as 20%.
