The suitability and limitations of present strawberry cultivars grown in the Pacific Northwest [Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia] are discussed. Totem is still the most widely grown cultivar mainly due to its virus tolerance and winter hardiness but it is more suitable for processing than for the fresh market. Sumas produces good quality fruits but they have a soft texture and are susceptible to postharvest rot. Shuswap is firm and attractive but lacks flavour. Advanced selections from a breeding programme, which could replace the present cultivars, are described.
