Recent trends in strawberry production and research: an overview.

World strawberry production has increased by 40% over the last 10 years and a review of production and research is presented. Some of the major aims of breeding programmes (ripening season, fruit size and firmness, disease resistance, flavour and incorporation of wild genes) are discussed and the contribution of biotechnology (somaclonal variation, transformation and protoplast culture) towards achieving breeding objectives are evaluated. The main cultural systems (matted beds, raised beds, potted plants) are described and the present state of integrated pest management is considered. Research into plant and fruit physiology research and fruit handling and postharvest technology is discussed.
