Changes in the sensitivity of petals to B. cinerea during aging of cut rose flowers was studied. Sensitivity to B. cinerea increased with senescence. The development of Botrytis blight disease in cut rose flowers was slower in flowers infected with a conidial suspension immediately after harvest than in flowers infected a few days after harvest. This phenomenon was also observed after cold storage of the flowers. No differences in petal sensitivity to B. cinerea were found between 6 rose cultivars (Mercedes, Madelon, Golden Times, Ilseta, Cilica and Sonata) inoculated with a conidial suspension. A correlation was found between disease severity on petals (evaluated according to disease index) and hyphal content in the petals. It is concluded that there is a direct relationship between postharvest senescence processing in Mercedes rose flowers and sensitivity to Botrytis blight disease. It is suggested that shortening the handling time after harvest or delaying the senescence process will help to decrease damage caused by B. cinerea.
