Double haploid methods for genetic analyses and accelerated breeding of pre-harvest sprouting resistant wheats.

Breeding for preharvest sprouting resistance in wheat depends not only on the genetic resources available, but to a large extent on the efficiency of breeding and selection techniques. Progress in doubled haploid production techniques for wheat is already sufficient to provide unusual opportunities for breeding and genetic studies on preharvest sprouting resistance. Dihaploid plants produced from anther/pollen cultures are homozygous, a condition difficult to obtain by any other breeding method. The production of "instantly" homozygous lines can accelerate the development of preharvest sprouting resistant varieties and provide materials for genetic/biochemical studies of postharvest dormancy mechanisms. Anther/pollen culture-derived calluses can also be exploited for in vitro tests of abscisic acid and other postharvest dormancy related molecules.
