Of 98 B. subtilis strains isolated from cold-stored citrus fruits, 20 significantly inhibited (60-92%) the growth of 6 pathogenic fungi in vitro. Strains PM9, PM11, PM12, AT191 and AT176 caused complete inhibition. PM12 also significantly inhibited the growth in vivo of Penicillium italicum (70.2%), P. digitatum (63.2%), Botrytis cinerea (89.5%), Alternaria citri (71.1%) and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides [Glomerella cingulata] (65.7%) in artificial lesions of lemon cultivar Eureka.
