The use of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and polyethylene liners to reduce weight loss during storage of fruits of the rabbiteye blueberry (Vaccinium ashei) cultivars Climax and Tifblue was investigated. Ethanol treatment was used to maintain aroma and taste, and fungicides were applied as a spray before harvest or as a postharvest dip. After 5-6 weeks of storage at 0 deg C, there were no significant differences in fruit weight or aroma between heat-sealed MAP and tied polyethylene liners. Ethanol treatment did not improve aroma or taste. Decay incidence (caused by Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea) was reduced to 2% by pre- or postharvest treatment with 0.2% captan + 0.2% Rovral [iprodione]. Storage decay increased with ripeness at harvesting.
