Postharvest life of gladiolus as influenced by sucrose and metal salts.

Methods for prolonging the vase life of Gladiolus (cv. Friendship) flowers and the changes associated with extended vase life were investigated. Cut flower spikes were placed in aqueous solutions of different metal salts viz. cobalt (0.5 mM); silver thiosulphate (0.25 mM); nickel (0.5 mM); zinc (0.5 mM); calcium (4.0 mM) or aluminium (0.5 mM) in combination with 4% sucrose. Flower opening was monitored and vase life was recorded. Water uptake and transpiration rates, electrolyte leakage from petal tissues and ethylene production by flower spikes were also measured. The number of fully opened florets was increased and % unopened florets was decreased by sucrose and metals. The vase life of cut flower spikes was significantly increased by the treatments varying from 19% with aluminium sulphate to 76% with cobalt sulphate. A maximum vase life of 12 days was recorded with sucrose + cobalt compared with 7 days for the controls. Treatment with metal salts reduced ion leakage and ethylene evolution by flower spikes.
