The state-of-the-art of process control of tower grain driers is presented. The incentives for process control, the required sensors and computer control hardware and software are presented using case studies of a tower drier. The work included the development of an on-line moisture measuring system and a model-based process control system implemented on grain driers. Depending on the drier, the control system manipulates the metering roll speed and/or the air plenum temp. to control the drying rate in order to maintain grain m.c. and temp. at the desired level. The system demonstrated the ability to reduce overdrying associated with manual control, resulting in a decrease in the energy consumption and an increase in head yield. The actual economic benefits depend on drier characteristics and grain throughput; however, payback times of less than 1 yr are common.
