A number of treatments were evaluated for the prevention of C. sooty mould development, caused mainly by C. cladosporioides, on citrus fruit. None of the treatments tested (wilting of fruit on trees or after harvest, dipping in chlorinated water, hot water treatments and the application of postharvest fungicides (thiabendazole, sodium ortho-phenylphenate, imazalil and diphenyl [biphenyl])) prevented sooty mould but the incidence was reduced by 50% in some treatments. C. mould development on descaled Marsh grapefruit was prevented by dipping the fruit in hot water (3.5 min at 48 deg C) followed by washing the fruit 48 h later.
