The agricultural marketing system in Egypt has been a mosaic of regulated and unregulated markets and of traditional and modern practices. This paper emphasizes the elucidation of the institutional framework and pricing mechanisms in these regulated and unregulated markets as they existed in the late 1980s, providing examples of the details of postharvest practices and produce handling. Following an overview of the development of Egypt's agricultural marketing channels, the government food subsidy and rationing system is discussed. This is followed by an examination of the regulated marketing channels, particularly for cotton and the major cereals, and the unregulated marketing channels, particularly for meat, milk, vegetables, and fruits. Some of the unintended consequences of the food subsidy system, wholesale market concentration, and postharvest losses and food wasted are discussed.
