Changes in endogenous plant hormones during ripening of tomato fruits.

Auxins and ripening indices (firmness, colour) were measured during ripening of normal and rin tomatoes harvested at mature-green, intermediate and fully ripe stages. Normal tomato fruits showed rapid changes in firmness and colour after harvest while rin fruits showed little change. The concentration of indole-3-acetic acid in rin fruits was higher than in normal fruits and increased steadily after harvest. Endogenous cytokinin levels showed little change during ripening of both fruits. Abscisic acid content in normal fruits showed a peak at the intermediate breaker stage; content was higher in rin fruits and it increased slightly during fruit development. The results suggest that auxin has some effect on delaying softening in rin fruits. Endogenous cytokinin levels do not appear to have any significant effect on tomato fruit softening.
