Food inventories at the farm level: the experience in Kenya.

A shift from producing sorghum and millet to producing maize has left Kenya increasingly vulnerable to storage losses and necessitates the adoption of new storage techniques, including building expensive storage structures. This paper sets out the magnitude of the storage problem, and reviews the means of storage. Six alternatives to the traditional methods are presented, along with a cost-benefit analysis of those methods. The composition of the major staple foods consumed in Kenya is given. The main efforts to improve the postharvest technology should be directed at the household level in the rural areas. At present, food losses in storage are substantial. The time period during which food grains can be kept in storage at the farm without substantial losses crucially depends on the agroecological zone. Postharvest technologies that can prolong the storage period and reduce losses can make a significant contribution to increase food security in the rural areas.
