Fruits of avocado cv. Hass (size 48) were harvested in Feb., Mar. and June of 1993 and stored at 1.1 or 5 deg C for 0, 2 or 3 weeks, then placed at 20 deg for ripening. Fruits were slightly softer after storage at 5 deg than at 1.1 deg . The time required for ripening decreased from 9.5 days with no cold storage to 5.7 days after 2 weeks of storage. Storage at 1.1 deg caused a significant increase in chilling injury compared with 5 deg . During 1993, the cultivars Hass and BL-122 were stored for 0, 3 or 6 weeks at 5 deg . BL-122 fruits tended to have more vascular discoloration than Hass fruits; flesh and vascular discoloration in BL-122 was much greater with fruits from the Ventura region than from the UC South Coast Research and Extension Centre. In a separate trial, chilling injury (vascular and flesh discoloration) of Hass fruits after 6 weeks of storage at 5 deg increased with leaf nitrogen concentration.
